PROFILE OF FREDIS REHABILITATION AND DISABLE CENTRE (FRDC)

Historical Background

In 2002, when Fredis Person and her husband came back from Norway to visit their home in Omoro Sub County, Moroto County, Lira District-Northern Uganda, they ended up not sleeping home because of intense LRA insurgency. They saw untold suffering of children and families due to armed conflict, they witnessed the trauma undergone by children formerly in rebel captivity and activities, worst of all there were many unhealthy children with different forms of deformities and disabilities resulting from untreated diseases/illnesses and rebel activities.

In response to the above situation, they resolve to advocate for resources to establish a centre that provides medical and psycho-social rehabilitation services to formerly abducted children, persons with disabilities and other vulnerable children like street kids, abused children, victims of torture etc. In their endeavor, Fredis person and her Husband landed on two Norwegian donors in the names of Ole .G. Steine and Trond Mohan who eventually funded the establishment of the today’s “FREDIS REHABILITATION AND DISABLE CENTRE” (FRDC). This centre was officially open by the president of the republic of Uganda on the 1^st of February 2007.

Legal status

Fredis Rehabilitation and Disable Centre registered with National Board for Non Governmental Organizations. It is also registered with company registry as a company by guarantee

Operation Area

FRDC is operating in Lira, one of the Districts in northern Uganda. Lira District is bordered by the Districts of Gulu in the North West, Pader in the North, Amuria in the South East, Dokolo in the South and Apac in the west. However due to the needs on the ground in the all of Northern Uganda, FRDC has been receiving persons in need of rehabilitation services brought from any district and because of this therefore, plans are underway to liaise with authorities in charge so that our operation is extended to other districts in need like Oyam, Apac, Dokolo, Pader, Amolatar etc

Mission

To ensure that all children with disabilities and other vulnerable children in Northern Uganda are fully integrated and reintegrated in communities through rehabilitation, education and physical support

Overall Goal

To support children with disabilities and other vulnerable children to regain their livelihood and to work towards their effective resettlement and integration/reintegration into the communities

Thematic areas

FRDC offers services in the following areas:

Medical rehabilitation. Under this there are; physiotherapy, corrective surgery and general basic medical care for the beneficiaries.

Psycho-social support/rehabilitation. This entails the following; counseling and guidance, life skills mentoring, tracing and reunification of children with their families, provision of catch-up classes.

Education. Advocate for fair treatment of pupils with disabilities at schools, look for sponsors for the extremely vulnerable children from impoverished families, build positive attitude about education among school dropouts and encourage them to go back to school with some small beginning packages. FRDC also provide catch-up classes at the centre where children are taught science, Social studies, Mathematics and English.

Facilities and Assets of FRDC

• Physiotherapy room with adequate space and up-to-date equipments
• Medical clinic/Dispensary
• Administrative Block
• Board Room
• One Big Hall
• Cafeteria
• Class rooms Block
• Two big Blocks that serve as dormitories, one for boys and one for girls
• There is enough space for children’s recreational activities and for further extension.
• The centre has got one vehicle
• The centre has got utilities like electricity, water and internet

Staff

As of this February 2009 FRDC has got a total number of 15 staffs (9 males & 6 females) both technical and support staffs.
